Be Unreasonable - Aydin Mirzaee’s Take on the World.

hmm… Apparently gmail is experiencing delays in receiving incoming messages… The first signs of this came from dreamhost:

” Right now we are experiencing some slowdowns sending emails to Google’s GMail service. This only appears to be affecting mail being forwarded through our systems, and not sending directly through an email client using our mail servers. We believe the slowdown to be on Google’s end, however we are actively investigating the situation to see if there’s something wrong on our end causing the slowdown.”

But, it seems the problem is in more places than one…

I just sent my gmail account an email from a yahoo account… an hour later, there is still no sign of the email…

I’m not sure how widespread this issue is but a few discussions on the internet have started about this in the past couple of hours…

is anyone else having the same problem?

According to the TED website, “The annual conference now brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).” Essentially, TED is a conference where some amazing people get together and talk about their life experiences. The great news is that most of the videos from these talks are now available for viewing to the general public on the TED website. I strongly encourage everyone to check out the website. There is a great deal that can be learned by this inspiring group of people. For fun, I’ve linked to a talk on the TED website by one of my favorite people, Tony Robbins:

So, I suppose that is one end of the story… What about the other end? What if you’re over 50? Well, it turns out that Ray Kroc was in his 50’s when he started McDonald’s and that Colonel Sanders was 66 when he started KFC. Granted, the comparison is not exactly apples to apples, but I do think that age (either end of it) should not be an excuse for people to be afraid of trying something new. If up until this point, your excuse has been “I’m to old to do that” or “I don’t have enough experience to go into that field”, please stop using this as an excuse… just go out there and do it

Amazon has introduced a new eBook reader that will allow bibliophiles everywhere to change the way they read. This device not only has an amazing display, but also allows you to download eBooks wirelessly (using Cell Phone Networks) for about $10. Good deal.

There are a lot of skeptics out there… that’s fine… but, I remember throughout my years in school I always had back pains due to carrying around so many textbooks. This device is light and can replace all those textbooks. Imagine being able to travel anywhere with all your textbooks and books alike + have access to the internet! that’s the revolution that the Kindle is starting. Bravo Jeff Bezos!

Alright, maybe my title was a bit too dramatic… but, the truth is that Google is indeed on Apple and RIM’s turf. Most cell phones out there today are closed in nature… this means that each of them has a different operating system and requires special software. In other words, if a developer designs a game for the iPhone, it won’t work on the BlackBerry or an HP pda running Windows Mobile. Google recently announced Android, which is an open source operating system + API.

You may ask, we’ve had operating systems for phones for a long time, what’s so special about Android? Well, at this point, mainly that Android is open source: this means that developers can better understand the operating system and how it works.

This is a good business case. Google has this new operating system… how can it get the world to start using it, or at least get phone manufacturers to install it on their phones… well, Google is attempting to appeal to developers as a start. Google is offering up to $10 million dollars in rewards to encourage developers to make applications for Android. If there are enough applications out there, then Android will be more attractive to end consumers and this in turn will entice phone manufacturers to install the operating system on their phones… but more importantly… we’re talking about Google here… does anyone really want the 800 pound Gorilla on their bad side?

If you own one of the two phones above, you are in luck. Telus is now offering unlimited email and text messaging to those who own the next generation BlackBerry Pearl or HTC S720. When I heard the news I was excited as I though to myself: “surely, they’re not going to single out users who own a different BlackBerry model”. As you may have guessed, I thought wrong. I obviously had too much faith in Telus. I called Telus and asked them if I could sign up for the $15 unlimited Email and Text Messaging plan (called email 15) and they said that I wasn’t eligible. I have to admit, I am truly disappointed

This Saturday, I had the pleasure of listening to Austin Hill speak about Angel Investing and some facts about the venture climate in Canada. It was an interesting talk with some informative questions and answers that followed. What intrigued me more, though, was reading through Austin’s biography on his blog (http://www.billionswithzeroknowledge.com/). Austin was born in Ottawa and started out his entrepreneurial career at age 17 (impressive and not all too common in Canada - as much as we like to call ourselves in Ottawa Silicon Valley North)… Two of Austin’s many claims to fame include the acquisition of his company TotalNet and the raising of $75 million dollars in capital for his last company Zero-Knowledge (currently RadialPoint).

If you are like the other 8 million people around the world that have BlackBerries, you are in luck! RIM has recently added an integrated Facebook Application to its popular mobile phone. The BlackBerry Facebook application is based on the Facebook Mobile API, which is still fairly new.

To be honest, I am very impressed and delighted by RIM’s move to integrate Facebook into its phones. If you have a BlackBerry, just go to m.facebook.com (on your phone) and you will be given the option to download this application.
